The South Rises Again
First Annual North vs. South
Skamania Conflict 2001
The first North vs. South Skamania Tournament was held on the Big Manistee River June 29 and 30. The anglers were required to limit their efforts to the "Big Man" Tippy Dam downstream to M-55 bridge. The time constraints were - 6:00 PM the 29th to 6:00 PM on the 30th. The 10 dollar entry fee generated a first place only, pay back of 1000 dollars and the proceeds were split between, the Brethren Boosters and the Manistee Chapter MSSFA. Participants were eager to help settle a long standing dispute of which side of the river is the best. Entrants signed in to fish for the North side or the South side - single longest Steelhead wins. The fisherperson taking the longest fish won the 1000 purse, the side they chose to represent gets possession of the traveling trophy until next year.

Contrary to some DNR statements, angler interest is always high when it comes to Skamania. The first year draw of 153 contestants confirms the importance of the Skamania program. Many Steelheaders maintained their positions for the entire 24 hour period and surrendered their comfort to defend the honor of their allegiance.  The DNR creel census crew was on the scene and reported limit catches earlier in the week.  Mark Tonello - Cadillac fisheries biologist, gave up his Saturday, to promote positive PR for the DNR. The good fishing would not extend to tournament day, only eight fish would be measured. When the smoke and rain cleared; 24 hours, 153 people, 1000 dollars, one coveted trophy and eight total Skamania - the South wins!  Larry Hirdning, Southern combantant, infiltrated Northern lines to glean the winning 33 inch, 11.85 pound Skamania, from below the North side coffer, taking top honors, 1000 dollars and sully the Northern flag. #2)north- Todd Bianga 31", #3)north- Sam Ung 29",  #4)south - Marty Place 28",  #5) north - Dave Stutter 28",  #6) north - Bill Foster 28",  #7) south - Mike Jolman 27",  #8) north - Mark Haas 27".
